Movies That Inspired Us to Create

Whether it be games, movies, books or tv shows, artists are constantly consuming art. It’s our imagination fuel, our brain food. Most artists wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing today if something hadn’t hit them over the head in their early years and made them go ‘holy crap, that’s cool - I want to do that!’

For today’s post, I asked the team about their own movie picks that made them get into games / led them to want to create.

Marc’s Picks

(Creative Director)

First off, both Waltz of Bashir and our upcoming project, Memories, take place in the same year - 1982 - and deal with very similar topics. Besides having a gorgeous and unique art style, after watching it, Marc became interested in creating his own games that were inspired by the real-life events he'd lived through.

"This one is purely for the art direction and animation!"

Marc’s Pick

(Animator)

"I was probably around 6 when I watched this movie called Jason and the Argonauts. The magic of the stop motion animated creatures just blew my mind! It surely put me on a path that made me want to produce magical things, give life to crazy creatures and tell awesome stories. The Ray Harryhausen movies will always have a very special place in my heart."

As for mine? It’s probably cheesy but…

Melissa’s Pick

(Community Manager / Producer)

I had a full-blown obsession with Studio Ghibli as a kid. I owned a bunch of their tapes on VHS and replayed them over and over, but none of them got more re-watches than Spirited Away. I wanted to be Haku’s friend, befriend troubled spirits (though if I could avoid the ones that wanted to eat me, that’d be great,) and crisscross into hidden realms like it was nobody's business.

But the scene that always got me was the mysterious train. I remember watching Chihiro wade through the water in her bucket/boat to get to the train station and just thought it was so cool. ‘Who comes up with this crazy stuff?’ I thought. Whatever the answer was, I knew that’s what I wanted to be.

. . .
